A STATEMENT FROM DAVID MUNDT + FAMILY.
On October 20th, 2025, Rosetta was visiting Rochester, NY. After a full afternoon of visiting friends in Spencerport, she was excited to share an earlier dinner with her son, Noah. The dinner conversation turned to their favorite Bible verses, their hopes for the future of their strong relationship, and what faith and scripture now meant to each of them. After over three decades of service at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rosetta was coming into the next chapter as a new retiree in Bluffton, SC, starting in 2024. Together with her husband of four decades, she was discovering new hobbies, traveling the world and opening her own Reiki practice. At 65, Rosetta now had the time and freedom to develop her passions.
As Noah and Rosetta were returning from dinner, Dylan Cook--a Spencerport High School student--made an illegal left-hand turn and smashed his SUV into Noah's oncoming vehicle. His recklessness caused a major crash at the intersection of Spencerport Road and Sias Lane. Following the initial impact, Noah pulled Rosetta out of the car and administered CPR on the roadside. A nurse who witnessed the accident rushed to assist. Gates EMT was able to locate a strong pulse after arriving on scene 3 to 4 minutes afterward, and Rosetta was rushed to the trauma center at Strong. Because her injuries were so severe, Gates EMT prioritized Rosetta's transport and arranged separate transport for Noah.
As the ambulance raced onward, Rosetta's strong pulse faded. Her husband (still in Bluffton) and two daughters (one in Seattle and one in Raleigh) rushed to their nearest airports, all holding onto hope that we would get to her in time. We are fortunate that Noah, Rosetta's sister, Rosetta's mother and several other loved ones made it to the hospital minutes after her arrival. However, despite the valiant efforts of the trauma team, Rosetta could not be resuscitated. Less than an hour after leaving dinner, our dear Rosetta was pronounced dead at 5:57 PM local time. Her official cause of death was determined as blunt force trauma from the crash, with no other confounding factors.
Rosetta's sudden loss is like no other we have ever known. Though we have tried to move forward however best we can, there is an immeasurable black hole in our lives. We ache for the time and love that we could have had, and the instantness of her departure has left us with unbearable pain, lots of questions and an unshakeable mission to honor her life. Rosetta leaves behind six beautiful grandchildren who will never know their wonderful grandmother, and the permanence of her absence is something we will struggle with all our lives.
We use "crash" instead of "accident" to describe what happened because Rosetta's death was preventable. As the live camera footage below shows, the cause of the crash was Dylan Cook's inexcusable failure to yield the right-of-way. Three separate witnesses and the official police report (also below) corroborate this fact.
The endless outpouring of love we continue to receive comforts us. Proverbs 3:5-6, which tells us to trust in the Lord with all of our hearts and to lean not on our own understanding, also brings us peace in our moments of sorrow.
With the establishment of the Rosetta J. Mundt Memorial Scholarship, we will memorialize a life well-lived, but one that was cut too short. We miss her so, so much.
